In the seventies of the last century, journalist and writer Elaine Morgan published her book "The Descent of Woman".
This book generated hot debates for a while and you can find many references for it on the internet.
Look for comment from scientists in this field (biologists, anthropologists, paleontologists..).
The book is easy to purchase (e.g. Amazon.com or Bol.com).
In the last ten years (2000 -2010) some palaeoanthropologists mention her suggetions not absolute nonsens but one of all options to tkae serious.
An example is   Cameron and Groves: Bones, stones and molecules.
